Barnwood.

Barnwood. The word conjures up the weathered romance of old barns, haystacks, and about three quarters of the wedding images currently on Pinterest. Look closer, and this reclaimed wood sensation is quickly becoming just as comfortable in the sophisticated rooms of current design as it is on the American Prairie.

Recently at the International Ceramic Tile Fair, held at the Feria Valencia in Spain, one of the hottest tiles trending right now was the look of

reclaimed wood. For those of us with four legged friends, high traffic areas and rollerblading teenagers, porcelain provides that natural worn wood look and feel, but with the durability to keep them looking that way virtually maintenance free.

Wood you? Could you?

The Nature Collection - Brown

Hardwood Floors. There is something inviting about wood. It evokes a sense of warmth, character, and comfort that is not often found in other materials. Nothing is as exciting as pulling up the carpet in an old home to discover the hidden treasure of the original planks of long forgotten wood. You can just smell the challenge of the weekend DIY project in the works. You’ve spent hours stripping, re-staining, and finishing each grain until it gleams. Proud of yourself, you’re ready to live in and on the fruits of your labor. They are absolutely gorgeous, that is until the light hits them just right and you can see each time your new puppy couldn’t make it to the back door, or that time you dragged the living room chair across the floor cialis thinking it would look better on the other side, or when your 4 year old decided that skating across the dining room floor was a good idea.

The point being… wood floors in theory are great, but for someone with pets, young children, and an active lifestyle the patina they take on may not be for you.

Enter Porcelain Tile! I know, I can hear the shrieks of protest as I type… Porcelain Tile! Yup.

Recent advances in glazing technology have given porcelain tile makers the freedom to create textures and looks impossible to achieve just a few years ago. Using Digital Glaze Technology, and employing a Digital Glaze Machine (which is similar to an Inkjet printer, just larger and using glaze instead of ink) tile makers can create exacting replicas of natural materials that fool even the most discerning eye. You may ask, why copy something that already exists? The simple reason is that porcelain is one of the most durable flooring materials around, it can be used in places where other natural material like wood cannot, and it can also be much more cost effective. Besides, how else would you be able to use wood planking poolside!
